Livestock and poultry feeds and its raw materials are susceptible to fungal/mold colonization. Major plant-based animal feed raw materials around the world include maize, wheat, broken rice, millets, soybean meal, sunflower meal, rapeseed meal, rice bran, wheat bran, and DDGS. Due to the shortage of conventional raw materials, many by-products are used in feed today at different levels of inclusion. Such by-products unfortunately have proven to contain higher concentrations of mycotoxins as compared to their parent grains as mycotoxins tend to concentrate on outer portion of grains. This factor coupled with long rearing period of animals make them more susceptible to mycotoxicosis.

Humidity and precipitation are ongoing challenges for animal feed raw materials especially during the Asian region’s annual wet season (May to October). Proper storage of raw ingredients and processed feeds is required to support feed safety, stability and quality. Trade is another consideration. Bans on corn imports in some Asian countries increases the need to maintain a high level of quality for feed raw materials. Protecting and preserving valuable nutrients supports optimal feed quality, thereby animal nutrition and growth. 

State-of-the-art research facility to accelerate global innovation in ruminant nutrition Boxmeer, the Netherlands Trouw Nutrition, the global leader in innovative feed specialities, calf milk replacers, premixes and nutritional services for the animal nutrition industry, has today opened its new Calf & Beef Research Facility, close to Boxmeer, in the Netherlands. With state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment, this new facility will engage in advanced studies alongside the group's two existing dairy facilities in Boxmeer and Burford, Canada, to accelerate innovation in ruminant nutrition.
